Q: When?
A: Starting on April 7th, 2011
Q: Where?
A: My run starts 120 miles (200km) north from the Arctic Circle in Inuvik, North West Territories of Canada.
Q: Why is it called Ali’s Arctic Challenge?
A: me, me, me…it is initiated by me, it is my solo run, and for me it is an Arctic Challenge! It’s a challenge that thrills me with wonder.
Q: What is the distance of this run?
A: It is at least 230 miles (400km) round-trip. From Inuvik (banks of Mackenzie River) non-stop to Tuktoyaktuk located on the shores of the Arctic Ocean, here a little rest and back non-stop to Inuvik.
Q: What is the running surface?
A: Ice of the Mackenzie River. There is a TV show called “Ice Road Truckers”. And yes, it is the same road I will be running on!
Q: Why is it called a Challenge?
A: The Arctic has one of the harshest environments on Earth, sub-zero temperature that can drops to -40F (-40C) or lower, weather can turn on a dime, it is a tundra (that's a treeless plain where a layer of soil remains frozen all year), a strong winds blows across the tundra, a monotonous flat landscape without any marking points covered with never ending deep, frozen snow, a White Desert without place to hide!
Q: Any spectators?
A: Maybe polar bears that remained, hopefully far out at ocean….maybe some ‘ice road truckers’.
Q: Any resting places, restaurants, lodge, cabins from Inuvik to Tuktoyaktuk?
A: No, there are no establishments between these two communities.
Q: Is this a charitable run?
A: Yes, this is a fundraising run for the Inuvik Homeless Shelter. The Inuvik Homeless Shelter (IHS), a not-for-profit organization that helps local aboriginal people. The Shelter is highly utilized. During 2009/10 the Inuvik Homeless Shelter provided services to a total of 85 individuals. Many of these individuals were repeat clients throughout the entire year, while some stayed only a few days. The majority of the 85 clients were First Nations (40 Inuvialuit, 33 Gwich’in and 12 ‘Others’). The shelter is undergoing the Shelter Enhancement Project of replacing the windows, doors, and renewing the insulation and siding to make the Shelter more energy efficient. The funds that the Shelter received do not cover the all expenses; they are short $24,000. I hope that my run on the Ice Road will help to spread the word that this Shelter desperately needs funding not only for the enhancement project but also for the every day services they provide. They are short with 5 bunk-beds and are in need of food supplies for the Soup Kitchen. (See attached word copy of the Inuvik Homeless Shelter proposal for the funds).
I am working closely with the Inuvik Interagency Committee that oversees the shelter. I am also working closely with the Inuvik Run Club, and from them I have received enormous help with the logistics of this run. The run is conducted in collaboration with the Inuvik Run Club (see attached word copy of the Inuvik Homeless Shelter proposal for the funds).
Q: How can people support this run?
A: 1st - all donations (100%) go to the Shelter. 2nd – the Inuvik Homeless Shelter has a charity status and donation is tax deductible in Canada. Please donate: (Here's the link directly to the donate page using Pay Pal. The "Donate" button is at the bottom of the page or you can send a cheque to the Inuvik Homeless Shelter at P.O. Box 2530, Inuvik, NT, Canada, X0E 0T0.)
General Note:
The Arctic: is the region around the North Pole, usually understood as the area within the Arctic Circle. It includes parts of Russia, Scandinavia, Greenland, Canada, Alaska and the Arctic Ocean. My hope and wish is to collect as much funds as I can and help those who have no place to go in this harsh Arctic environment. That those who are in need will find a place to sleep and meal to eat in the Inuvik Homeless Shelter. And, if I see Aurora Borealis it will be an extra bonus!

120 miles, non-stop run across Long Island - Fundraiser to fight the breast cancer http://www.li2daywalk.org/alicja2011.asp (when open the link, please look for an icon with my name in the right lower corner)
Q: When?
A: I will start running on April 30, 2011.
Q: Where?
A: My 120-mile running route, which I have personally created, will start at North Woodmere Park (adjacent to JFK Airport) and end at Montauk Point.
This will be my 5th annual run to raise awareness and funds to help fight breast cancer in support of breast cancer patients. Since this run across LI is close to most of you in the Tri-State Area, please consider joining me on any part of this run and participate in the fundraising. We all know someone who has suffered, is suffering, or may suffer from this illness. Let’s help. Let’s fight the “C” word together so one day this illness will never exist!
