March 10, 2009 Initiative: HELPING OTHERS Collecting spare shoes for athletes in Niger As you may know I was running twice in Niger.  It is a beautiful but a very poor country.  2/3 of the country is just sand of the Sahara Desert.  This week, I was approached by two people from Niger to collect running shoes for athletes there.  There, not all athletes can afford running shoes and they have to run bare feet.  You can look at the www.niger1.com webpage to learn more about Niger.  This webpage is run by a man from Niger whom I know for many years.  He will organize the 1st shipment to Niger.  This weekend, I am organizing 'Skinny Ass 50K' (two back-to-back 50K runs) on Saturday in the Rockefeller Park, and on Sunday around the Rockland Lake.  If you plan to come to either place, please bring extra running shoes that for some reason you don’t want anymore and donate them for a fellow runner in Niger.
